Dairy-Free Smoothie Bowl

December 7, 2016 , Haiya

You know what my problem with smoothie bowls is? Their size. In order to decorate it in as celebratory a manner as it deserves, the bowl must be far too large for a single serving. This is the reason why I hardly ever make a smoothie bowl, and prefer a breakfast of yogurt, berries and granola instead.

Today, however, I knew I had to do something with all that excess celery I ordered (I needed to round the bill up to a hundred dirhams, otherwise Kibsons.com doesn’t deliver), and I was far too hungry to simply juice the celery (with other things) and have just juice for breakfast. So, I decided it’s time to brave a smoothie bowl instead and I pulled out my -what is by now dusty- blender.

I also had a bunch of the sweetest, most brightest clementines that completely took me back to all the winters I’ve spent at my grandparents’ in Pakistan. In Pakistan -well, Lahore, at least- the onset of wintertime  means clementines, lots and lots of clementines. Mangoes are to Pakistani summers what clementines are to Pakistani winters, and they get eaten by the half dozen, and usually with Pink Himalayan Salt. Due to the chilly weather, they don’t even need to be refrigerated, and I can’t explain how or why a citrus fruit is so enjoyable in the cold- but it is.

Finding myself the sweetest little clementines made me so nostalgic and I can’t get enough of these babies since then. I’m simultaneously also afraid of depleting my supply too fast and never finding identically sweet clementines again but hey, who ever got to have their cake and eat it too?

Anyway, back to the smoothie bowl. Two stalks of celery and green apple is pretty much all it took, mostly because I didn’t want to have to deal with leftovers. In case you’re wondering, (a) M is out of town and (b) he would’t have eaten a celery smoothie bowl even if his life depended on it.

Recipe:

Here’s all it took to make the dairy-free smoothie bowl:

Dairy-Free Smoothie Bowl

Dairy-Free Smoothie Bowl

Ingredients

  • 2 stalks of celery (without leaves)
  • 1 Granny Smith apple
  • 1/3 cup coconut water
  • 1 high power blender.
  • Whatever toppings you’d like. I used the following:
  • Blackberries
  • Blueberries
  • Raspberries
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Bee Pollen
  • Chia Seeds
  • Bilberry
  • Flaxmeal.

Instructions

  1. Blend the celery, apple and coconut water.
  2. Pour the vibrant green sludge into a bowl.
  3. Decorate your smoothie bowl with toppings if you’re a food blogger who doesn’t even remember what it’s like to eat cold food cold, or hot food hot. Mix everything in if you’re a normal person and care to eat more than you care to click.

  1. Your smoothie bowl looks good, but I am a bit worried with the celery taste. I assume the apple and coconut water blended well with the taste. 🙂
I laughed at the now dusty blender. 😀 I guess mine too. Hahaha

    1. You can make it with anything really, and thank you for saying the bowl looks good– it didn’t come naturally and I spent a good 10 minutes on it, haha!

  2. This is a good idea…! I don’t normally drink smoothies – I don’t even own a blender! Ooh, not sure about the celery though. I’d sub it in with something else!

    1. The celery does have a strong taste– I just like it that way! If you want to water the celery down, I suggest using only one stalk, and adding a pear 🙂

  3. Wow, looks delicious! I make smoothies and smoothie bowls regularly, but I’ve never tried adding celery. Definitely need to give it a try! I’m sure it complements the other flavors. You’re right that to have enough canvas space to decorate, the smoothie bowl has to be so big! Sometimes, I split it up into two meals after snapping a photo of it, haha.

    1. I always wondered if people usually split them into two portions and have someone to share them with, haha. I feel that if I leave half a portion for the next morning then (a) I might not want the same for breakfast the next morning and (b) it might taste stale?

  4. i actually had the best smoothie bowl of my life yesterday at this vegan cafe and wanted to make one myself! this couldn’t have came at a better timing 🙂 thanks for sharing, love your photography here as well 🙂

    1. Thanks so much for the compliments, Annie; and I really want to know what was in this “best smoothie bowl of your life”!!

  5. Looks delicious. We are wild about bilberries and in general ALL the berries.
Have you been satisfied with Kibsons deliveries and products? Asking since I have been very happy wit them. Once I made a little mistake and ordered 6 KILOS of ginger. Hahhahah. Luckily we found a solution..

    1. I’ve been extremely satisfied with their service, in fact I’d go so far as to say that they’ve changed my life! I love how I can order my groceries at night just before going to bed and they’re at my door by the next afternoon. What’s best is how reasonable the prices are and I’ve only ever had one semi-bad experience with some mouldy berries. Other than that, the quality has always been so good as if I’ve handpicked the best pieces from Spinney’s. Funny how you orders 6 KILOS of ginger, haha!! Ginger juice for the village?
