I often get asked what the best restaurant for any given cuisine of food item is, and it’s not always for a special occasion or planned meal. Sometimes, people happen to be in JBR and want to know where to eat, and one of my fixed answers is Bombay Bungalow.
Previously known as House of Curry, Bombay Bungalow is the absolute best option in Dubai for when you want to have a nice Indian meal in a beautifully decorated, clean restaurant that has a near fine dining feel but prices far lower than fine dining. The food is at par with, if not better than, most of the high end, “fine-dining”, licensed Indian restaurants in town.
Here are some of the things I tried at Bombay Bungalow on my last visit, some of which I highly reccomend:
The drinks were a hard pass for me, but then again, most mocktails are. I’m a sparkling water kind of person, straight up.
The table-side preparation of raita is a great way to set the tone. You can completely customize your yogurt dip to your preference, and then scoop it all up with poppadoms while you wait for your food to arrive (which isn’t too long). I love this raita so much, that I always ask for them to leave it till the very end of the meal, as if goes extremely well with a lot of the courses.
This was not your average pani puri. 1. it was green. 2. The hollow, puffed up balls that you pour the spicy and sour water into were (a) homemade and (b) had avocados inside rather than just the usual chickpeas, and 3. This was ridiculously good.
Calamari Bhel. Who’d have thought? SO good, and highly recommended.
Butterflied, breaded and fried prawns with a sun-dried tomato spread. Very, very good.
We loved this platter of mixed grills. With a variety of chicken, fish, prawns and lamb, everything tasted distinctly unique and beautifully flavorful.
Ladies and gentlemen, the showstopper: The Goan Crab Curry. Oh, my God. The sweet crab meat, the luscious curry and the coconutty rice alone were reason enough to put Bombay Bungalow on your Regular Dining Spots list. The fact that these guys are on the Entertainer app is NOT good for my diet.
The bhindi (okra) was not the best I’ve had (it lacked the crispiness I was lusting for), but how can I pass on okra if I see it on any menu?
Sadly, we were way too stuffed to spare any room for dessert (yes, sometimes the bottomless pit of a stomach I have does fill to capacity). But thats ok, because this wasn’t my first time at Bombay Bungalow and most certainly won’t be the last.
