On-nomi – The Japanese Word For Drinking With Friends While Social Distancing

March 28, 2020 , Haiya

I don’t need to explain what’s going on in the world right now, nor will I dwell on how COVID-19 has turned our lives upside down. I might need to explain what On-nomi has to do with this though. Some might feel trapped in their own homes, and might view the entire need to self-isolate as a sacrifice for the greater good. Truth be told, I- on the other hand- haven’t entirely been hating it. Yes, I am faced with waves of anxiety related to the uncertainly of what the future holds, but for the most part, I’m making the savoring this gift of time and loving how much more time I now have now to cook, blog, engage with my readers and to really slow down and take in all the blessings we normally take for granted.

Enter, On-nomi. I’m quite the social butterfly and love meeting my friends regularly. It’s not uncommon for meto be out till midnight on a weeknight because I have so many friends, love trying new place, and enjoy one-on-one catch-ups. Although there is none of that happening anymore, I’m truly seeing the silver lining to social distancing for a while because (a) it’s allowing me to spend more time with my husband (he has nowhere else to be these days either) and (b) it’s giving me time to try so many of the recipes I’ve been putting on hold.

Today is my 10th day on Corontine / practicing social distancing, and I decided to pair my love for tea with my love for structure and decided to host a daily On-nomi session at 5:30 p.m. You might have noticed that I don’t specify the time zone. Well, the reason is that I’m mostly having tea all day long, but I figured that if everyone dedicated 5:30 p.m. as their daily On-nomi time, they’d have something to look forward to. Whether it’s an anti-oxidant rich bowl of matcha, tea-facts, your favorite tea of any sort or even a tea-based food or dessert, I’d love for you to share it with me.

So, Dear Readers and Instagram Followers, please join me at 5:30 p.m. everyday by simply sharing a picture on your Instastory of your tea, tag me (@passmethedimsum), hashtag #onnomi , tell me which tea you’re having, and why you love it.  I’ll repost it to my story so that we can spread the love and knowledge of tea, and hopefully have a little chat to check in on each other and make sure we’ll all ok.

I’d love to hear from you. Let’s On-nomi.
